I want your love, and all your lovers' recommendations

Only gods are worshipped unconditionally. People have to earn their love.

And Lady Gaga is only human - without question both deservedly famous and polarising, talented and fallible.

She attracts more fawning fanboyism than any artist with only two albums deserves, and just as much uninformed criticism from those who underestimate her.

So welcome to the middle - where we want the best from her... but good or bad, we'll take everything for what it is.

I'm 20, straight and Australian; part-time metalhead/pop fan, full-time music obsessive. I'm writing about every Madonna single here: The comparisons aren't entirely valid, but no one is more important than Madonna in understanding what Lady Gaga could be.

An introduction.

I seem to come up with one good idea per year; 2009 was Iconography (which, mind you, is no less important to me). This is 2010.

During that year, something changed. At the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Lady Gaga’s performance felt alternately baffling and hysterical. But a mere three singles and an album later, the 2010 VMAs felt like a homecoming. In between collecting eight awards (and maybe even deserving some of them!), she belted out the chorus of her upcoming album’s title track Born This Way with a steak on her head, and it truly felt like - I hope! - a generational anthem in the making.

Just about every critic or fan of pop music has had their personal Gaga “conversion” moment. Even Pitchfork sees her potential. But I want to go deeper. Balanced by my hatred of the not-so-distant LoveGame (and most of The Fame, which I’ll justify later), maybe we can remain reasonably objective AND, Lady Gaga willing, deeply in love with what she does.

And update on a regular basis. Really.

(yeah, I like the blog’s design a little too much myself.)

I think it’s fair to say that I’m fairly optimistic about Gaga’s future; she’s only ever improved artistically, and...
